February 28, 2025 Product Updates | Improved Calendar & Bout management

This sprint, spread across two weeks was focused on improving how information is presented to league organizers.

Upcoming Events & Event Feed

The current Calendar page is helpful at providing a very broad overview of what events are coming up in the month but misses the mark during low-volume parts of the year and while the Roller Derby Calendar is still getting set up for many leagues. To help address this, we’ve added a basic upcoming events listing to display all events that are coming up in the future.

We also added a Atom feed for those who use feed readers or wish to be notified of events as they get published on Roller Derby Calendar. For example, we are already using them to cross-post to a Discord server.

Improved event ordering for league organizers & event archiving

The original ordering that was used on the Bouts management page ended up appearing random, which made finding specific events more difficult. Events are now sorted by the earliest start time that has been listed for an event.

We also added a new publication status for events, archived. When an event is marked as archived it will no longer show up by default in your list of events. Events can easily be archived by clicking the “Archive” link or by updating their status when editing the event. Event archival isn’t permanent and can always be undone if the action was made in error.

Display full applicant details

A lot of the information that was being captured in the application form was not being exposed to league organizers. We’ve added two new ways of reviewing application details:

  • A quick “Full application” toggle when deciding to accept an applicant to be crewed
  • A table of all the applicants along with their responses, excluding game availability and position preferences.

When reviewing applicants there’s a Show full application button that when clicked will display the answers to the other questions that were asked to the applicant.

However, if a league has a number of applicants it’s a lot of toggling and scrolling in order to get everyones email addresses or to determine allergies and/or dietary restrictions. This is where the “Other Details” tab plays a part in presenting applicant details in an information dense table. As of right now the headers are fixed and any additional questions overflow into the “Other” column.

Application form builder improvements

We’ve updated the application builder to make it more usable on a mobile device. Previously when viewing on a device with a smaller screen, the application form fields would bleed onto the question templates.

To also simplify populating the application form, we added a Add default questions to this application form to make it easier to fill in your application form with the most commonly asked questions.

Leaving Pre-Release

With Roller Derby Calendar having been out for roughly a month, many of the rougher edges were caught and improved upon. With the application in a decent state, we are going to open up signup for all leagues to start using the application. We will also be turning on billing and restricting access to features for non-paying teams.

For a team on the free tier they will be able to organize one event, which includes:

  • publishing event to the event calendar and feed
  • accepting applications
  • crew management
  • assigning crews to games

If a league wants to manage more games the team administrator will need to sign up for a subscription. For more details please refer to the pricing page
